City landscape of Barcelona, Spain.
As of March this year, more than 674,000 electric and hybrid vehicles have been registered in Spain. During the last 12 months, this country has seen a sharp growth in sales of electric and hybrid cars, with January 2022 hitting a registration record. An increasing number of drivers in Spain are more inclined to choose electric cars rather than diesel or petrol ones. The soaring oil prices and poor economic landscape as well as environmental concerns and carbon-free goals combined spark the interest of drivers on a larger scale. According to a survey, 22% of Spanish car buyers are reported to consider diesel or petrol cars while 78% are said to take electric cars into account.
There are currently some tantalizing subsidies and incentives on electric vehicle purchasing and charging infrastructure in Spain to help electric vehicle adoption. The initiative running now is called Moves Ⅲ which is worth 800 million euros. It is initially used to achieve registration of at least 250,000 on Spanish roads by the end of 2023. In addition, a target of building 100,000 charging points also have been set to prop up the initiative in a complementary way.
